Home Office: Identifying Your Needs

July 31, 2007

Not many years ago, the thought of working from home was considered a fantastic vision of the distant future. However, with more and more people setting up home offices every day, it is clear that future has arrived earlier that many expected.

You may be interested in a home office because you are starting your own business, telecommuting or in need of space to tend to household paperwork such as paying bills, doing taxes or keeping tabs on investments.

Depending on your needs, a great office may be a pull-down desk in kitchen or a fully furnished setup in the basement. Still, no matter what type of home office you want to create, the goal is the same: a home office should have a comfortable, logical design that makes it easy to do the business at hand.

In essence, a home office is a fairly simple concept, but arranging one requires some careful consideration and planning. You will need to select a location, choose lighting and purchase office furniture and desk accessories.

Without a game plan, you may end up with a home office that is inefficient and impractical, and more expensive that you had planned.

Pool Supplies Should Also Contain Safety

July 29, 2007

A swimming pool with attached spa has just been installed in your backyard. Now you are ready to invite your friends for a big splashy pool party ? or are you? Do you have all of the pool supplies you need to maintain your new fiberglass pool? Do you have the chemicals, pool toys, covers, automatic cleaners, pool heater, ladders, liners, slides, diving boards and on and on? You can see pool supplies can add up quickly. You want to be sure you have the fun toys for the kids, but the spa cover and pool alarm are necessary for safety and peace of mind. Supplies for the pool can be a very broad category. How are you going to use the pool? Do you have small kids or are you a retired couple? What kind of climate do you live in? Are you going to do the maintenance yourself or hire someone? If you are going to do a lot of the work yourself, don’t become overwhelmed. There are pool cleaners that are automatic robotic styles. They make spa and pool covers that automatically cover the pool for winter or if you are gone. There is even pool equipment that controls the pool equipment so you won’t have to spend too much time with upkeep and more time enjoying the water.

Traditional Interior Design

July 29, 2007

Traditional interior design encompasses a great variety of elements in a home. From the ceilings to the floor; including the trim, the wall finishes–all the way to the window treatments and the furniture.

The careful designer must focus attention on each of these items in order to create the ideal design. Lighting, wall treatments, flooring, and furniture are all fundamental steps in creating a smooth design. Each of these elements should tie in carefully with the last, creating an interchanging staircase of design. Theme, color, texture, and placement are the tools with which you are to design this delicate stairway.

Themes of traditional interior design vary from traditional to modernistic, from eclectic to yes–even retro. The decision of theme should (in my opinion) be left entirely up to the individual homeowner or business owner. Each person has a message they would like to convey to the world through their space. It is your job, as the designer, to listen to their wants and needs and to develop a solution that suits them perfectly.

Luxurious Whirlpool Baths Aren?t Just for the Rich and Famous

July 28, 2007

A Jacuzzi has been popular since the 40’s. We stopped taking the evening bath and are now taking more morning showers, but these wonderful whirlpool baths revolutionized the ways we relaxed and used our tubs. We feel better when we take a soak in a whirlpool bath because the swirling water is naturally calming and the bubbles offer therapeutic benefits. The bubbles stimulate the nerve endings just under the skin delivering more blood to the areas and we then feel warm and more relaxed. If you use these baths, you can carry away toxins in the muscles and reduce swelling and inflammation. You can’t always use your outdoor pools especially if you live in a winter climate so whirlpools can be used anywhere, anytime you feel like you need some extra muscle relaxation and stress relief. It wasn’t so long ago when Jacuzzis and whirlpools were only found in resorts, spas, mansions or bed and breakfasts. You had to leave your home and go on vacation to enjoy the soothing Jacuzzi’s jets in a bath. That is no longer the case. A whirlpool or spa of any kind is no longer a luxury item for the rich and famous.

Home Decorating For Smaller Spaces

July 27, 2007

"Big Things Come In Small Packages" We’re all familiar with this quote, it’s normally associated with gifts not home decorating, but it should be.

A one or two bedroom house, apartment, condo or townhouse can be just as impressive and grand as something with fifteen bathrooms, Wow, imaging having to clean all those, I have enough trouble with two.

One interesting things I have found from past experience is that decorating a smaller place is actually easier, not to mention less expensive.

Whether your currently living in a small space or downsizing ? that’s another one of those trendy "buzz" words, which simply means your moving into something smaller ? planning how your going to decorate or redecorate is a good idea.

You may think because it’s smaller, having large pieces is out of the question. Not true, having oversized furniture is not going to make your rooms appear smaller, what it will do is give a warm inviting feeling. Of course the layout and size of a room will determine how many pieces can comfortably go into it. After all, you may be looking for drama and comfort, but you still need to be able to maneuver around.

Use Air Filters and Common Sense for Allergy Relief

July 26, 2007

Do you suffer from allergies or asthma? If you are one of the millions of people that do, air filters and air purifiers provide much needed relief. Do you have smokers in the house? Air filters or air purifiers get rid of smoke and odor in your home. Different filters will accomplish different goals so you wouldn’t purchase the same filter for both problems mentioned above. Before you buy, consider what kind of allergens or particles you are trying to remove. There are a variety of technologies used in room air cleaners including ionization, ozonation, electrostatic precipitation, ultraviolet light, mechanical filtration and odor absorption.

An air cleaning system with a paper air filter works somewhat like coffee grounds, collecting in the coffee filter. Your air purifiers will generally have a filter that collects the particulates and gases in the air. As they get more and more clogged they actually can remove more particles and become more efficient, however, less air is passing through them also. If your unit has electrostatic plates, they get clogged with dust and need to be cleaned often or they won’t be efficient at all. The Ionic Breeze works somewhat this way giving the particles an electrostatic charge. Both systems work well; it is what you prefer for your home. If the air is too humid, a dehumidifier will lower the chances of mold and mildew growth.

Bring Out the Comforters for Back to School

July 25, 2007

If the weather is turning chilly it must time for the kids to go back to school. Bring out the comforters, flannel bed linens, quilts and stadium blankets. As in all bed linens and comforter sets, they come in different sizes to fit the bed you own. You probably have a king or queen size bed, and your kids may sleep in loft beds at home or at the dorm. A twin comforter will be just the right size for the kids away at school. Flannel bed linen comes in a lot of colors, patterns, and prints. They are great for young and old providing the right amount of warmth and softness next to the skin.

Picnic Tables for Casual Dining Fun

July 24, 2007

Picnic tables are the perfect solution for an afternoon or evening get together. They offer everything from different shapes of a picnic table, to ones that fold up in a box. Picnic tables and outdoor benches are great for kids because they are strong, sturdy, and can handle lots of abuse. I remember the picnic tables on the playground when I was young; most of the time you were lucky if you didn’t get lots of splinters from them. Now they come in all kinds of materials such as ? wood, aluminum, plastic, steel mesh, PVC, and recycled material. There are plans that you can find online or from your home improvement store if you feel inclined to do it yourself. If you really want to get close to nature and have a casual day outdoors with the kids, forget the table and just get out picnic blanket. Picnics can also be quite romantic. Doesn’t it sound like fun with a bottle of wine and some cheese, just lying back on the blanket watching the clouds change shapes? It’s a great way to spend a lazy afternoon with someone you care about.

Stress is all around us, from the office to the front yard and everywhere in between. Homeowners are buying hammocks and porch swings to create that stress free zone they need to unwind after a busy day. All hammocks and porch swings are not created equal. A hammock can come with a stand for easy set up anywhere such as at poolside or by a lake; or others are hung between trees or from a ceiling. You will have to decide what type and style you want as there are so many sizes and types available. You might also want a chair style that can be hung from the ceiling. There are different sizes available in these as well. These are especially nice if you live in an apartment or townhouse. A hammock and swing are great sources of leisure for any backyard or porch. Combine a quality hammock with all of your other patio furniture and create a getaway in your very own backyard that rivals any trip to the islands.
